The idea for the Young Water Action Team was born in the Aquatic Technology department at Hogeschool Zeeland in December 1999.
At the Youth World Water Forum in Holland in June 2001, more than 200 young water professionals from over 40 countries attended the three-day event. A team of 34 members was selected to represent all regions of the world and implement the regional action plans that emerged.
YWAT has been supported by the Water Support Unit of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fund Partners for Water, Province of Zeeland, Japanese Secretariat of the 3rd World Water Forum and Hogeschool Zeeland in Vlissingen, The Netherlands.
