The YWAT Secretariat is based at the Hogeschool Zeeland, a Dutch university of professional education. Hogeschool Zeeland offers business courses, engineering courses and courses in education and health care, and specialises in water-related courses. The Aquatic Ecotechnology course of study, which is the only one of its kind in the world, provides students with broad expertise in integrated water management. This course of study has now acquired not only a national but also an international reputation and is highly regarded by both Dutch and foreign students.
The YWAT office at the Hogeschool Zeeland is located in Vlissingen and is supported by the Province of Zeeland in the southwest of the Netherlands, on the right bank of the river Scheldt. Geographically speaking, this part of the Netherlands is an area of estuaries and polders. The towns of Vlissingen and neighbouring Middelburg have a combined population of 90,000. By car and by train, Vlissingen is about two hours from Amsterdam.
