YWAT Regional Workshop in Egypt (March 2003)


Under the Auspices of His Excellency Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Egypt, the Young Water Action Team in cooperation with CEDARE (the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe) on the 23rd of March, 2003 organized one day workshop for the Arab Region Youth.

The Participants were from Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Sudan, and Egypt. The participants were of different backgrounds (engineers, academics, researchers, politicians, students, from NGOs).The workshop discussed the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The main three topics addressed in the WS were, Water Governance, Rational Water Use, and Environmental Aspects of IWRM. The workshop started with the opening session, in this session representatives from YWAT, CEDARE, Cairo University, and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said their statements. Then there were 5 lectures (IWRM, IGWRM, Rational Water Use, Water Governance, and Environmental Aspects of IWRM). Then the participants were divided into 3 working groups and each group discussed separate topics.

The message that the Arab Region Youth would like to tell it to the 3rd WWF is: ‘We want ultimate justice in all aspects of life, including global governance, rational and equitable use of all resources, and conservation of the environment where we live, for every human being regardless of his race, beliefs, power or his nation’s power.'
