Yukon River report, by Marieke Bemelmans
Sustainable water management is taking steps at the water systems; the steps that are taken may not harm the functions of the use of the water system. The uses of the water systems should be able for next generations to use. The Yukon River is one of the biggest rivers of North America, it flows trough Canada en Alaska.
Characteristics
The river flows through two countries: Canada and Alaska and is one of the biggerst rivers in North America.
Length: 3.185 km
Suface of the river basin: 855.000 km2
Problems
There are no problems for the ecology in the Yukon River. Because of the greenhouse effect it is possible that the Yukon river will notice the effects. There shall be more melt water, so the drainage peaks and the flow capacity will be larger. Because the people will not be in danger when this happens, it is not necessary to make several rules for the maintanance of the river.
Conclusion
The management of the Yukon river is a sustainable way of management. As the river in the future will be managed the same, than the next generation can also use the river in these good circumstances. But the rules for the use of the river should be sharper, and there should be made new rules that protect the ecological quality of the water system.
Abstract<
Sustainable water management is taking steps at the water systems; the steps that are taken may not harm the functions of the use of the water system. The uses of the water systems should be able for next generations to use. The Yukon River is one of the biggest rivers of North America, it flows trough Canada en Alaska.
The source of Yukon River is at the North- West of Canada close by the city Skagway. It flows for 3.185 kilometres through Central Yukon Territorial and Central Alaska. The river basin as a surface of 855.000 square kilometres.
In the map the river basin is marked with a dotted line
The river basin of the Yukon River
The river basin of the Yukon River is a wildlife area. In the river basin is not much industry and agriculture, so there is al very low supply of nutrients on the Yukon river. The nature capacity of the water system is very large, so the nutrients will be broken through the river itself.
The Yukon River is a navigable river therefore the management of the Yukon River is in Hands of the state Alaska. The state has to follow several rules that are set up by the court of the United States of America. These rules are made to make clear how the public can use the water systems. There are now rules made that guarantee a good ecology condition of the water system. In the Yukon River are now adaptations made by people, for a better use of the water system for the public and protect the high natural ecological quality. The river flows through a width area and through mountainous area, and it follows its own way.
Because of the greenhouse effect it is possible that the Yukon river will notice the effects. There shall be more melt water, so the drainage peaks and the flow capacity will be larger. But the people will not be in danger when this happens. So it is not necessary to make several staps for put in a special way. The river can be managed the way it is managed now.
The management of the Yukon river is a sustainable way of management. As the river in the future will be managed the same, than the next generation can also use the river in these good circumstances. But the rules for the use of the river should be sharper, and there should be made new rules that protect the ecological quality of the water system.
